The Women’s Institute is a National Organisation which celebrated its centenary in 2015. The Datchworth branch, which was formed in 1927, celebrated by holding a coffee morning on the National Day with cake and many members dressed up in how the members would have looked 100 years ago!
We also completed a commemorative quilt which was worked in Red Work embroidery. A number of our members completed at least 1 square and the quilt was assembled by Bev Jeffrey. This has been exhibited at the Herts WI Autumn Council Meeting in St. Albans on 28th November and again at Datchworth Christmas Tree Festival, where it was greatly admired on both occasions. We will continue to exhibit it at every opportunity.
The photo shows members who had contributed towards the quilt.
The 90s Theme was also carried to the Christmas Tree Festival on 2nd December in Datchworth Church and WE WON !!!
It is a very friendly WI. Our current membership is 43 and we welcome new members. Anyone in the village is welcome to come along as a visitor for at least 2 meetings before deciding to become a full member.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm in Datchworth Village Hall where we enjoy talks and demonstrations from our visiting speakers.
Church Flowers Weekend 12 & 13th August the WI took their turn to decorate the church and we had a good turn out of members on the Friday all with their flowers and foliage to create some beautiful arrangements. Click on link to see our collage of the results- Church flowers collage 2017
Our August meeting although called the Garden Meeting and held traditionally in the garden of one of our members, was taken indoors due to the rather inclement weather. Member Helen McIntyre opened her home to us where we all enjoyed tea, cakes & sandwiches provided by the committee. We did also manage to get a view of her beautiful garden.

For 2018 we propose making Trauma Bears for the local Fire Brigade to give at the scene of a fire or accident to traumatised children. We also will be making Bonding Squares for premature/sick babies. Made in pairs, one is given to the baby the other to the mother and they are swapped over on a weekly basis.
So this year it is Bears & Pairs of Squares
