The Women’s Institute is a National Organisation which celebrated its centenary in 2015. The Datchworth branch, which was formed in 1927, celebrated by holding a coffee morning on the National Day with cake and many members dressed up in how the members would have looked 100 years ago!
It is a very friendly WI. Our current membership is around 40 and we welcome new members. Anyone in the village is welcome to come along as a visitor for at least 2 meetings before deciding to become a full member.
Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30 pm in Datchworth Village Hall where we enjoy talks and demonstrations from our visiting speakers.
On 11th April, to celebrate our 90th Anniversary year we held a special meeting open to not only our members but the general public. The demand for tickets was so great that we did have to disappoint some people as we filled the hall to seating capacity having over 160 people attend.
The nationally acclaimed speaker Michael McGrath presented an inspiring illustrated talk about his determination to overcome his own disabilities with Muscular Dystrophy and his enthusiasm to encourage young people who were facing life with this debilitating disease. We were treated to film clips of youngsters who, through his charity Muscle Help Foundation, had realised personalised experiences or “Muscle Dreams”. The charity is aiming to deliver 657 of these- representative of the 657 muscles in the human body. He also showed a short film demonstrating his sheer determination and resolve resulting in his achieving the fulfilment of an ambition to reach firstly the north and then the south poles in temperatures of -42º. We were all inspired with the thought that nothing is impossible if you really want it.
Members and guests were then treated to what the WI do best- home made cakes and tea.
Subjects for our next meetings are as follows:
9th May – AGM
13th June – Taking Better Photographs – speaker Fallon Ismail.
